Photography 101: Black & White
Every black and white photograph is monochrome. Yet, did you know not all monochrome images are black and white?
The last part of that definition is significant: A picture developed, or executed, in black and white OR in varying hues of just one color.
Black & White
In the old days, photographers used “toning” to apply mood to a monochrome black and white photograph. Of the three, only the first image is an actual black and white photograph.
Sepia and Blue-Toned
The left image is a “sepia-toned” monochrome photograph (implying a warm sunset, or autumn).
The right image is a “blue-toned” monochrome photograph (indicating an impending storm or a cold day).
Which do you like best?
All three examples are monochrome. Do you have a favorite? Share in the comments section below.
