The famous quote, “Never look down on someone unless you are helping them up” is so true. In photography, however, I encourage people to look down, look up, and look all around. Notice and explore what’s around you from every angle possible.
I learned this technique from my dad. He was an avid photographer and, while on a camping trip as a teenager, I witnessed him get on his belly in the sand under a swing-set to photograph sand bees up close, shooting macro style. Now, this was before digital photography, and he patiently waited in that position for at least thirty minutes for his shots – not wanting to waste film. I only wish that I still had copies of what he made that day, as it was truly amazing!
Look Down
My personal need to explore has complemented by my love of photography. I am always reminding people to walk slower and notice what’s around them. Pay close attention to the sounds of the wind and birds, breathe in the smell coming from the campfires, and really feel the ground below your feet as you walk. We miss so much during our day because of our fast-paced lifestyles and demands western culture places on us. Becoming more mindful, acknowledging our surroundings and enjoying the moment is something to cultivate and practice.
During wedding photography shoots, unique photos to enhance the traditional ones are always the goal. Walking through the reception, I use different angles and heights to create dreamy scenes.
In photography, experimenting with points of view means going a step beyond in photographic thinking. The subject doesn’t have to be the flower, child or plate of food. Choose instead to transform your photography and make pictures come alive by changing it up.

Get low, stand on a rock or ladder, use what you thought was going to be your subject as the foreground, try another lens, change the shutter speed or even shoot in black and white.
Patience is always a virtue. It took over an hour to capture this photo of the Robin attacking the Hawk.
While shooting photos, look all around you for a clever shot.
Don’t forget to look up!
And, just like my dad, it’s not unheard of for me to get on my belly or hang upside down to get a great shot!
But in your photography adventures always have fun and explore new possibilities.
Cheers to your next inspiration!
