Our Travel Photos Hold The Memories

Images made while traveling or wandering through beautiful places conjure up memories of the spots we visited and the things we saw. Photos viewed later conjure up all of the senses we experienced and communicate a sense of place.

Remember The Feeling

But, have you ever taken a photo of a landscape while traveling only to look back at it and wonder why you made it in the first place? Maybe it’s because everything was there except for the feeling of that moment.

When we get ready to take a photo, decide what is making you want to take a photograph in the first place, bringing to mind a couple of descriptive words about what you are looking at and then keeping those details in your photo to help you convey them.

The Golden Gate Bridge is a suspension bridge spanning the Golden Gate, the one-mile-wide (1.6 km) strait connecting San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean.

In this photo, I wanted to show just how big this iconic bridge is, so I made sure to have a vantage point high up in the hills above in Marin County at the Golden Gate View Point. In the background is the city of San Francisco, a huge ship, the windy road to get there, and Alcatraz Island to help add scale.

Bring A Focus

Our eyes want something to focus on. When composing a shot, pay attention to a center of interest like a windy road, shadow, garden or structure – anything that creates a place for the eye to land. In my version of the Golden Gate Bridge, I chose to have the leading lines form a “Z” pattern starting from bottom right to top left. I wanted the eye to travel the photo, from the hills across the bridge and then through the city, out to sea.

Get ready before you go. If you are in a popular place and would like to get a specific shot, one that you’ve seen on a postcard, perhaps, be sure to plan ahead. Take into account the time of day for light and how many people will be there and what will the details be that will create your photo.

Be Present

The best photos can be made when we are aware of our surroundings. Look around, is there something unique to make a photo? Get family and friends in photos too. Most of all, have fun creating!

Cheers!
